Shades of Soul: Cut Chemist interviewed by Oliver Wang

Words by Oliver Wang

This one had been in the works for a minute but with his touring schedule, it was hard to fit in until now. Me and Cut Chemist sat down and chopped it up for nearly 90 minutes, talking about his life and career, plus the formative songs that go with both. It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of his work, whether within groups like Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli or his solo productions, remixes and mixes. The occasion for this interview is actually pegged to his latest release, a compilation of mid-1980s experimental French music (yeah, you heard that right) called Funk Off. If you know anything about Cut and his love for cut-and-paste, you’ll understand why he’s releasing a comp of songs by a pair of obscure artists who were scratching on reel-to-reel and assembling pastiche songs with a hip-hop sensibilities far earlier than most.

Hollywood: Cut Chemist Live at Amoeba!

Cut-Chemist

WORDS BY AMOEBA:

Amoeba Hollywood – June 5th @ 6:00pm

Join us for a live performance + visuals with Cut Chemist – one of the greatest mixmasters on the planet, a world class scratch artist, and collaborator with Jurassic 5, Edan, Blackalicious and DJ Shadow.

It goes without saying he’s also a LP collector assassin too – amongst the genres he loves to crosscut, a big love of Cut’s is crunchy electronic post punk – so much so that he’s now issued the compilation Funk Off!, highlighting French minimal synthheads Vox Populi! and Pacific 231 with tracks that originally appeared on their rare ’80s cassette and vinyl releases.

Solid Steel: Funk Off Megamix

Solid Steel: Funk Off Megamix

SOLID STEEL:

Solid Steel (16th May)This week the show has a distinct 80’s feel about it starting with a mix from Cut Chemist featuring remixes and songs from ‘Funk Off’, a compilation of music by 1980’s French post punk, industrial, minimal collective Vox Populi! and Pacific 231. Cut Chemist discovered their material in 2004 while on tour/record digging in Milan where he picked up a compilation featuring their track ‘Megamix’. Originally released in the 80s, the track was not rooted in disco, hip hop & DJ history but rather post punk and industrial influences. Music Concrete is what the collective would have perhaps described their approach at the time. “Wild Style on dust” was how Cut’s collaborator Tom Fitzgerald described it on hearing it 20 years later. Finding this record ultimately led to Cut Chemist tracking down the group, bonding over shared aesthetics and getting their blessing for this collection, which includes unreleased tracks, photographs and little-seen flyers and art from the group. The vinyl and CD are released in the UK on 9th June through A Stable Sound.

Cut Chemist: one of the greatest mixmasters on the planet, a world-class scratch artist, and collaborator with Jurassic 5, Edan, Blackalicious and DJ Shadow. It goes without saying he’s also a LP collector assassin too; amongst the genres through which he loves to crosscut, a big love of Cut’s is crunchy electronic post-punk — so much so that he’s now issued the compilation “Funk Off”, highlighting French minimal synthheads Vox Populi! and Pacific 231 with tracks that originally appeared on their rare ‘80s cassette and vinyl releases. [This] show is a live performance that encompasses all forms of media (vinyl, cassettes and video), along with live delay and loop effects. Here, Cut reunites with longtime collaborator and Cinefamily’s own Tom Fitzgerald, who’ll perform a dense blanket of live visuals along with the music. After the break, it’s La Brune Et Moi: a “lost” film recently re-discovered, and a whizz-bang tour through the Parisian punk underground (circa 1980), starring The Conformist’s Pierre Clementi and featuring energetic Gallic bands like Metal Urbain, the Go-Go Pigalles and Astroflash!
