This one had been in the works for a minute but with his touring schedule, it was hard to fit in until now. Me and Cut Chemist sat down and chopped it up for nearly 90 minutes, talking about his life and career, plus the formative songs that go with both. It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of his work, whether within groups like Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli or his solo productions, remixes and mixes. The occasion for this interview is actually pegged to his latest release, a compilation of mid-1980s experimental French music (yeah, you heard that right) called Funk Off. If you know anything about Cut and his love for cut-and-paste, you’ll understand why he’s releasing a comp of songs by a pair of obscure artists who were scratching on reel-to-reel and assembling pastiche songs with a hip-hop sensibilities far earlier than most.

Amoeba Hollywood – June 5th @ 6:00pm
Join us for a live performance + visuals with Cut Chemist – one of the greatest mixmasters on the planet, a world class scratch artist, and collaborator with Jurassic 5, Edan, Blackalicious and DJ Shadow.
It goes without saying he’s also a LP collector assassin too – amongst the genres he loves to crosscut, a big love of Cut’s is crunchy electronic post punk – so much so that he’s now issued the compilation Funk Off!, highlighting French minimal synthheads Vox Populi! and Pacific 231 with tracks that originally appeared on their rare ’80s cassette and vinyl releases.
This week, Cut Chemist released a definitive compilation of the French minimal synth duo Vox Populi! and Pacific 231. The project aptly titled, “Funk Off” will be released first in Japan on Rush and Boundee, with a worldwide release slated for October.
